The First Step Is Preparation
Before you attempt to give your pup its pill, make sure that you have all of the necessary supplies ready. These include the pill itself, a small bowl or dish, some treats or food that your pup loves, and towel (optional). Additionally, make sure there are no distractions in the room such as other pets or people. Having clear boundaries and expectations will help make the process smoother and less stressful for both you and your pup.
The Second Step Is Positioning
You want to position yourself in such a way that it gives you maximum control over your pup's movements while still being gentle but firm in order to minimize any chance of injury or discomfort. If possible, have someone else hold onto your dog's collar while you administer the pill. Alternatively, if your pup is small enough, placing them on a table or counter can also work - just make sure they are securely held down by either a towel or another person.
The Third Step Is Administering The Pill
Once everything is set up and everyone is ready, open up your pup's mouth using two fingers placed under their chin and gently pushing their head upwards. Place the pill at the back of their tongue before firmly closing their mouth shut while simultaneously stroking their neck downwards towards their chest which will cause them to swallow reflexively without needing to chew or bite into the pill itself. If you need an extra layer of security against accidental spitting out of the pill then feed them some treats afterwards as this will help ensure that it stays down in their stomach where it belongs!
Giving pills to dogs can be intimidating but with proper preparation, positioning, and administering techniques it doesn't have to be overly stressful for either party involved! With these steps outlined above you should now have all of the tools necessary for making sure that your pup gets its medication safely and efficiently - good luck!
